We believe that early childhood holds the key to our development.
We are a Montessori school based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori; a physician and educator, born in Italy in 1870; the first woman to become a medical graduate from the University of Rome. After years of experimentation and observation, she evolved a scientific and rational early childhood educational system that contributed to the physical as well as intellectual development of the child.
The Montessori Method is a way of educating the children through their experiences and their senses. Her educational methodology has been adopted in almost every country and is followed by unfailingly still. Through the Montessori Method, the children come to learning, it is not forced upon them. Children learn at their own speed, creating a deep knowledge base, confidence in their own intellect and independence.
Our founder, late Mrs. Mimi Guha, established Learning Tree Montessori House, more than 3 ½ decades back, on 18th July 1989, based on Montessori Principles.
We started with only a handful of children. We have spent these years devoted to the principles of Montessori; educating ourselves, our students, and parents; ensuring that we create awareness about early childhood educational theory and what we do at Learning Tree.
Our beloved Mrs. Mimi Guha truly loved all students like her own children. We carry forward her ways of teaching and we hope to continue bringing joy to the students, teachers, and staff. Learning Tree began as a school devoted to Montessori traditions and learning and now is a home dedicated to our wonderful student and parent community.
After a child is born, he/she first comes in contact with the first environment, ie, the family environment where his/her learning begins.
The second environment is the social environment when he/she comes in contact with relatives and family friends. He /she observes and absorbs everything from these two environments, thus his education starts at birth.
Around the age of 2 ½ years he/she has an urge to develop further. He/she becomes conscious of everything and wants to perform all by himself/herself and with perfection. At this stage he/she needs more physical nutrition. It is now that he/she requires the third environment and that is the educational environment. It is the Montessori House which can fulfil this need.
In a Montessori House, a child is offered exercises of practical life [EPL] where he is offered activities like rolling, lifting and putting down a chowki and other such activities to settle the child and refine his/her fine motor coordination.
He/she is offered sensorial activities that help to develop a child’s senses and thus the child learns to appreciate things in the correct manner. From activities dealing with Arithmetic the child learns precision of numbers and other mathematical operations.
The child learns Language and understands that language is made up of sounds put together and that spoken language is composed of sounds. He/she traces sandpaper letters and gets muscular memory of these letters which help in writing.
The Montessori philosophy centres on a child-led self-directed approach emphasising independence, freedom and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical and social development, fostering a love of learning and individual potential.
We know that children first experience the world through their senses. Dr. Montessori said, "Nothing comes to the intellect that is not first in the senses". In our Montessori environment, we have a wide range of sensorial materials designed to help the children develop their senses. The children will gain the ability to make judgements, to compare and discriminate on the basis of size, weight, texture and colour, taste, temperature, smell etc.
Children are helped towards independence as early as possible so that they can function by themselves and within a group. Here the children grow up close to nature and achieve harmony with it, learn to take care of themselves as well as of the environment and develop their social awareness.
Keeping these principles in mind, we have designed our environment to suit your child’s needs. Your child will be in the care of trained Montessori educators with years of teaching experience. The teaching conducted is based purely on Montessori principles using the Montessori apparatus, with special emphasis on sensorial, linguistic, and mathematical development.
